Quick service food at WDW: Why does Animal Kingdom beat Magic Kingdom?

If the Magic Kingdom (MK) is Walt Disney World's (WDW) flagship park, why is so bad at quick service? Animal Kingdom (AK) and Epcot are the forgotten parks but have by far the best quick service, and it isn’t even close.

Let me tell you my thoughts. It might come down to diversity is good, or that so much attention at MK is paid to the appearance that little is thought about food. Or maybe the history of MK made it difficult to make any progressive changes. Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe only make tiny incremental changes. Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe will always be a burger joint, and with such a large number of customers it will never be quality.

Epcot and AK have an advantage because they have to be diverse, that’s built into their themes.

The only redeeming thing about MK quick service is Sleepy Hollow and the food there is not really a meal. The flatbreads at the Pinnochio Village Haus do not taste like pizza, and I have had more watered down awful Cokes and cold fries at Cosmic Ray's than anywhere else. Pecos Bill's seems to change the menu so often just when you find something you like it gets changed for something you don’t like. Seating at the MK quick service locations is less than stellar. Cosmic Ray's is so loud inside and hot outside most of the year. Pecos Bill's is so dark and hard to find a table and the seats have no backs. They are so uncomfortable.

MK quick service only has large Cokes at Casey’s Corner. They are bountiful at AK and Epcot.

Epcot's Connections Cafe falls into the same basket as the MK eateries. It is too big and quality and variety suffer. I have not had quality eating experiences there. Epcot countries have smaller quick service cafes that actually have fresh food that tastes good. Although seating is mostly outdoors and suffers from being too hot most of the year, lunch seating at Mexico’s La Hacienda de San Angel is without peer in any park. If you have never eaten inside the “hidden” seating you need to. It has air conditioning and a view.

AK also has fewer lands and a broad swath of foods that are not burgers/chicken fingers and fries. AK is also not afraid to take a risk on new foods such as the strawberry fries at Mr Kamal's.

Harambe Market was wonderful at first, but lost its way after a few years. The worst thing that could have happened to it now has as the menu from Restaurantosarus is brought in.

Other eateries in AK are above the MK eateries. Satu'li Canteen is always fresh, and Flametree Barbeque has meat that isn’t burgers as well as outside seating, but within the shade. They also have what our family likes to call “halbes hähnchen” AKA half a chicken in German.

In summary, the smaller the quick service, the more likely it is to have quality and fresh service. MK makes you suffer enough just getting to the park. Walt Disney World needs to improve the quick service there so as to make the experience as a whole more tolerable.
