Looking for Soda at Lookout Cay

If there is one thing Disney does well, it is creating the illusion that you are always “almost there” – whether “there” is the first view of the castle, the boats on It’s a Small World, or the beginning of the fireworks show. Such is the case with arriving at Lookout Cay on Lighthouse Point from our favorite classic Disney ship, the Magic. Waking up to the readily identifiable sounds and sensations of the ship docking, we were very excited for our first visit to this new private experience, reserved for DCL guests.
Most cruises we’ve been on have docked at a busy port. Think Nassau with its new port arrival terminal complete with welcome centers and a newly rebuilt Straw Market, all within view and walking distance from your ship.
The port arrival experience at Lighthouse Point is a completely different experience. Stepping down the gangway after tapping off the ship, we were greeted by what seemed to be miles of concrete. One must be confident at this point that you have everything you need for the day because there will be no "let me just run back to the boat" moments here!

The causeway curving from the boat to the island is beautiful. Its graceful arc brings you across open water to the island. Feeling the salt spray and wind on your face and reminds you of every suntan commercial you’ve ever seen and hopefully you remembered yours because it’s a long way back at this point!

Sidenote, the crew offers small wagons for parents hauling children and the like. There’s also a golf cart shuttle for guests who are unable to make the mile walk to the island.
Boy, was I excited to see the Lookout Cay security point welcoming us to our adventure. Now it’s time to hit the beach, grab a cold soda, and enjoy the day.
Or so I thought. We had actually only arrived at a tram stop. Yes, we walked 15 minutes, just to arrive at the tram stop. We were almost there. It is obvious that DCL has tried to make this experience about more than a beach day. The tram drivers appear to be hired locally and are so careful in their attention to safety procedures. The overhead entertainment track is a conversation between a young child and an older relative about the unique flora of the island. That plus the scenery whizzing by generates more excitement about being almost there. And we are.
Almost. Next stop is the end of the line for the trams, and the one center of commerce where you can purchase the sunscreen you forgot and now have no desire to go all the way back to get from your cabin. Here’s also the juncture of Disney and local junkanoo culture, with photo backdrops of stylized Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy that are swarmed by excited guests. We don’t stop, however, because we want to grab a beverage and explore.

Walking beyond the shops toward the beach, we realize there is no direct path to anywhere! The beach is inaccessible except by specific stairways down from a maze of boardwalks that crisscross and wind around like the friendship bracelets for sale in the local good shop.

Undeterred and certainly still feeling like an explorer, we are trying to find our way to the food courts, True True BBQ, and True True Too. Try saying that three times fast!
Yes!! After several false starts, I find a path in the maze that actually takes me to True True Too, and I eagerly scan for the soda fountain (free flowing Coke products 24/7 is definitely one appealing factor of DCL for us).
Success! I reach for a cup and realize that here, to reduce waste, the cups are reusable plastic. Very ecological. No ice has been loaded in the dispenser, but the caramel colored fizzy goodness tastes delicious as I sip and taken my surroundings. As I savor my liquid pixie dust I am reminded that sometimes the harder it is to get something, the sweeter it tastes. And that is definitely true for the soda on Disney’s Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point!
